Fuel Loading Under Way at Kyushu Electric's Sendai 1
July 9, 2015—
A key milestone toward the restart of Japan's nuclear program was reached July 7, when fuel loading at Kyushu Electric Power Co.’s Sendai 1 began. A total of 157 fuel assemblies will be loaded into the 890 megawatt reactor by July 10, with restart planned for mid-August and full-power operations by September.
Sendai 1 will be the first Japanese nuclear reactor to begin operating since September 2013, when the last of the country’s power reactors shut for safety inspections following the 2011 accident at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima Daiichi.
Before resuming operation, reactors must meet enhanced safety requirements set by Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority after the accident, obtain NRA approval of their pre-operational plans, and gain the approval of local authorities.
NRA inspections for Sendai 1 were completed on July 3 and Satsumasendai City and Kagoshima prefecture approved its restart in October and November. The restart of Sendai 2 should follow its sister reactor by about two months. Another 15 of Japan’s 43 operable reactors are moving through the restart process, which will bring on the most needed reactors first, in localities and prefectures more supportive of restart.
